This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a “dying city.” We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean’s “American Pie,” a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope.” – Rob Bliss, Director & Executive Producer

First of all, f*yeah Grand Rapids for not letting anyone tell you your city is turning to dust! I come from an old factory town myself and hope that my hometown would do something equally as awesome to prove that our town is a beautiful city worth visiting. Second, mission accomplished. This video makes Grand Rapids look like a magical place that I want to play in. I’ve never been to Michigan but suddenly feel like I’m missing out.

Aside from loving the story behind why this nearly ten minute long lipdub was made, I am thoroughly impressed by how it’s creators were able to showcase an entire city in a single shot. With perfectly timed execution this video features marching bands, pillow fights, helicopters, explosions, and a number of residence singing into the camera, the concept behind this video is technically very difficult. It spans what seems to be the entire downtown area with participants jumping in an out of frame on cue.

According to the description, the video features 5,000 people and required a major shutdown of the downtown area. Yet, it only cost $40,000 all of which was locally donated.

To which, I say once again, f*yeah! This is bold, innovative, dare I say ‘modern’ way to show the world you are alive and rocking it.
