This may be the most accurate short ever made about online dating. Warning — things get a leeeeeeeeeeetle racy. (Via Laughing Squid, by comedy sketch troupe POYKPAC.)

Multitouch screens on everyday surfaces
Thanks to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, you too can be just like Tom Cruise in Minority Report, sort of. All you need is a Microsoft Kinect strapped on your shoulder, CMU’s fancy finger-tracking software, a portable projector, and some other stuff I don’t understand (A.K.A. magic). It’s called OmniTouch – “a novel wearable system that enables graphical, interactive, multitouch input on arbitrary, everyday surfaces.”
Screens? Where we’re going we don’t need screens. And with that, my guest posting on HSA comes to an end. Farewell, internet friends.

Smashing Pumpkins in SloMo
If this gut-wrenching tale of Jack-o-lanterns falling to pieces doesn’t get you in the spirit of Halloween, I don’t know what will. (via the high definite)
Shark Pool Trailer
On the hottest day of the season, one unlucky undergrad party is shaken by a shark…in their pool. And the only way to stop the bikini-laden carnage it too “get out”of the pool. How will they ever survive?
Just in time for Halloween, this parody of pretty much any classic horror movie trailer features all don’t-go-upstairs action that a good horror flick needs.
Note: Despite a lack of gore or nudity, this video has been flagged by YouTube. If you don’t feel like signing in to view it, I’ve posted another Halloween treat above.
Poetry Slams Just Became Interesting
I love a good rant; doubly so if it’s simultaneously intelligent, comedic and poignant. And I’ve never been to a poetry slam, so I’ll apologize if this is par for the course (but I sincerely doubt it.) There’s not a lot I can say about the topic without giving it away, but suffice to say it’s possibly the most passionate rant I’ve ever heard about a very familiar childhood topic. It’s also very reminiscent of George Carlin and Bill Hicks – commentary masked with whimsy and tinted with a slight hint of complete and utter insanity.
Give it thirty seconds, and I can almost guarantee that you’ll be along for the whole ride.
Rant the fuck on, Shane Hawley, and thank you for bringing us along on your insane, looping rollar coaster of verbal barrage.
Early graphic design music video: Funkstörung’s “Grammy Winners”
I was trying to remember the first time I’d ever seen ‘graphic design as music video’ before. I think this is it. Funkstörung’s “Grammy Winners” created by The Designer’s Republic.
For other examples see Royksopp’s Remind Me, also the Jay-Z Kanye ‘Niggas in Paris’ “fanmade” vid.
Booooooooooooooooooooooooom!
This is one of those videos that makes me so happy high-def cameras were invented — this slowed-down nuclear explosion may be the most beautiful thing you see today, period.
Note: This video is sadly silent, so you’ll have to provide your own soundtrack. Allow me to recommend, perhaps, Pachelbel’s Canon in D Minor? Or, if you prefer a more recent vintage, the works of Motorhead.
Additional Note: Barrett points out that the video title includes the word “simulation.” But that should not damage your enjoyment of the awesome.
M83 — Midnight City
I’ve been listening to the new M83 album released this week on repeat at the Blip office, and it’s doing wonders for my productivity. There’s something about chill tracks that focus my attention like a laser beam. Anyway, here’s the trippy video for the first single, directed by Fleur & Manu. Think Harry Potter meets Watchmen.
Shaft Theme + Imperial March = Best Audio Mashup Ever?
I bumped into this epic music mashup last week and decided to hold on to it for today. Why? Because I love it. There is something about the Shaft theme that some how makes the Imperial March more menacing in a “oh no you didn’t” sort of way.
The track was recorded live on a APC40 by Chris Evans-Roberts then layered with matching video in Adobe Premiere. If you find yourself as addicted to this funktastic mashup as I am, ‘don’t hold back’ and download the song for free here.
Quantum Levitation in Action
Science is fucking awesome. Ever wanted to see a real-world demonstration of a superconductor enabling quantum locking? Even if you didn’t before, this video will scratch the itch you never knew you had.
I can’t attest to the science behind this other than superconductivity is A) really cool, and B) quantum mechanics tends to be really hard for me to wrap my brain around. Certain types of matter and energy start acting in really weird ways at the very large, very small, very hot, and very cold scales of things. A rather cheeky scientist once told me “Well yeah; the edges are where the simulation starts to break down.”
At the very least it’s a demonstration that we take a lot of the processes of the universe around us for granted, and are in no danger of running out of new things to discover. And that science is fucking awesome.
PS: Hoverboards, people – get on them.
PPS: Try not to think too hard about that simulation comment if you’d like to retain your sanity.
